Overseeding
As your lawn and surrounding vegetation mature each year, it is a good idea to consider adding new grass seed into the mix. Sometimes there are weak areas in the lawn because of a drought or insect pressure from the previous year. These thin areas are usually the first area that new weeds will appear each year.
Exciting new grass species are being developed and released each year that offer many benefits over older lawns in terms of their ability to withstand pest infestations and weather extremes. In some cases, a new more suitable grass type must be planted to deal with differing conditions such as shade; possibly created by a growing tree or perhaps a new fence or other structure.
Overseeding blends generally consist of three types of grasses: Kentucky bluegrass, Fescues and Perennial Ryegrass. The combination allows for the grass to grow in most areas found in a lawn and the ratios can be altered when the conditions call for it. In other cases, thickening of the lawn with straight perennial ryegrass is the solution as it will germinate quickly and help in the prevention of weed infestation.
The rate of germination, under ideal conditions, for the different grass seeds are:
- Kentucky bluegrass is the slowest to germinate ranging from 14 – 30 days.
- Fescues from 7 – 14 days.
- Perennial ryegrass from 5 – 10 days.

Aeration
What is Aeration?
Aeration involves perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots. This helps the roots grow deeply and produce a stronger, more vigorous lawn. The main reason for aerating is to alleviate soil compaction.
When you aerate your lawn and then overseed, you will like see your lawn completely renewed.
